Dendriet is a network of musicians in The Hague (.nl) that perform with networked electronic and acoustic instruments. The word dendriet, or dendrite, is also the name for the receptors of a nervecell. Dendrites are typically branching branches. You'll find these fractal shapes in ice, in metal chrystals in limestone, and likewise, in our performance setups. Please do check out our homepage by clicking the stone. You too are invited to join the discussions.

New video codec

The BBC is making a new video codec (the nice thing about standards is that there are so many to choose from). The /. community is happy as it is open source. The core of the codec are "wavelets". I could not find a better explanation about it then this:
"Wavelets are mathematical functions that cut up data into different frequency components, and then study each component with a resolution matched to its scale. In effect the video is not, at first, compressed but converted into a waveform and sent, the compression is carried out on the waveform that has been created."
This sounds like it is some sort of an advanced fourier analysis, with the biggest advantage over fourier that it scales it's resolution to each component. That phrase made me wonder weather the computer musicians could use the algoritm for sound. It would make excellent pitchshifters :-D
As I was negatively amazed by how movement looks on DVD, I hope that this new codec has it's emphasis on moving stuff across the screen, rather then faking movement by building pictures frame by frame.
