Dendriet is a network of musicians in The Hague (.nl) that perform with networked electronic and acoustic instruments. The word dendriet, or dendrite, is also the name for the receptors of a nervecell. Dendrites are typically branching branches. You'll find these fractal shapes in ice, in metal chrystals in limestone, and likewise, in our performance setups. Please do check out our homepage by clicking the stone. You too are invited to join the discussions.

CD lay out

We're most probably going to print black cd's (like some playstation one cd's) with a writable top. I've been designing that in Pheauteaushop. I took the scan of the stone that is everywhere on this site, and made a bitcrushed two coloured variant. Also, the 'crack' is supposed to be left open, allowing the reflective layer of the cd to shine through. There will be two layers of ink: first the black, on top of that the 'oker'. Here are the results. Black layer, oker layer, result. Do you like it?
UPDATE: for printing: The visual black parts only
For human viewing: (click this is you are one) the virtual test print, screen resolution

More Max/MSP externals talk

Having mentioned Max/MSP externals earlier, I came to think of this site again. So you were looking for that external you were using last year and forgot where you got it??? This is the ultimate solution! While you're there also check for the excellent Lobjects collection, nice objects to work on lists.

More Cage

I just planned to put some serious music on Dendriet like I put puberty music on retecool.com, and by sheer accident I just noticed Ernst logged cage as well. Well then... here's some more. Nice recordings, bad mic positions, though, way to close to the unimportant percussion tools. Neuhaus Electronics.

Essl does Cage

Austrian composer Karlheinz Essl was asked to make a new incarnation of John Cage's "Fontana Mix" (1958). He did so with the help of the Max/MSP programming environment. The result can be downloaded here. Unfortunately it is a selfcontained application, so a peek into the actual patch is not possible....
Essl is also the creator of the very useful set of Max/MSP externals called the RTC lib (highly recommended!). Of course this set of externals has been used extensively for the "Fontana Mixer".

Early warning!

Oh yes, while I'm at it: Dendriet will be having a performance at the Garage, Zuidwal in the Hague on the 8th of January 2005.
More info later...

Oh, great, gracious weirdness!

I do realise that some visitors here think that we do strange stuff. For them I have this. Ha! we seem to be quite normal compared to these people! Anyway, they make and use some interesting instruments for unconventional use! They also sell two kits with an excellent description on how to build them. The site's navigation is quite confusing but has loads of freaky mp3s and photos. So check it out.

Buchla Matrix Mixer

Schematic! It's fairly straight forward schematic, except it has two antiparalel diodes that clip the signal should it become to loud. The choice of diodes will matter a lot for the sound.
Clipping as an ultra fast brick wall limiter... I like Buchla's rough style!

New copyright law down under

Upside: Musicians that are not the writers of the music can enforce ISPs to take their music of off the internet.
Downside: It doesn't sound to clear who has the right to have a site taken down. Translated to the Dutch law, it can mean that the BUMA (owns the exploitation rights) can force a ISP to take down a site, eventhough the musicians (the copyright owners) are totally OK with the site being online.
And oh, the copyright is extended by 20 years, which means they have to wait another 20 years for first ELvis-recordings to become public domain. (For us, this happens next month.)
