Dendriet is a network of musicians in The Hague (.nl) that perform with networked electronic and acoustic instruments. The word dendriet, or dendrite, is also the name for the receptors of a nervecell. Dendrites are typically branching branches. You'll find these fractal shapes in ice, in metal chrystals in limestone, and likewise, in our performance setups. Please do check out our homepage by clicking the stone. You too are invited to join the discussions.

Kelly Dobson, A pitch following Blender

Kelly Dobson made a nice pitchfollowing blender that has a nice influence on her. From her drawing, suspect she's using MaxMSP (take a look at the partnumbers on the IC's.) Which makes sense, as pitchtracking is fairly hard to do. She writes the voicing should be blender-like. If she is indeed using principal components analysis like here drawing suggests, then that makes sense. This type of analysis means she's looking for overtone series, and the more you growl, the more energy is in those overtones. Also, she might have filtered off the low frequencies in order to stop the blender's own sound from feeding back into the analysis. Interesting!

Iceland

I'll be going to Iceland this july. After a tour around the island, I'll be spending a few days in Rekjavik. So I was wondering if you could point me to cool venues. Maybe a place to jam?

Formalism vs the scratching at the edge of possibilities

As far as education is concerned, Dendriet has a lot of roots in the formalistic apporoach to music of the Institute for Sonology. But the way Erkki Kurenniemi was a researcher is actually more familiar to us, well, at least to me.

Kraak!!!!

Kraak is a belgian label/group. They have a really nice website with lots of high-enough resolution mp3s. They have friendly music. Nice site to kill some time on!

Warning in the American style

This can happen to you, unless you buy this product!
This is a warning for Leon, who is currently trying to make noises with tesla coils, among other things. Tip for Leon: My voltstick lights up when I approach neon tubes, even the tiny ones. @ 30cm, even with a termopane window in between, the voltstick is responding! Usefull!

Dendriet as a record label

We will soon release our first CD. As soon as we have the artwork sorted out we will be selling our first release. The first release is a recording from 2 years ago at the Zuidwal in The Hague (no it's not yesterdays concert!!). All of us (except Aslaug) play on this disc. This event was more or less what spawned the birth of the whole Dendriet network. You can find an MP3 of another session from that same concert here. The cds will probably be available via the this website and probably you will be able to pay for them via Paypal. More on this later, when all the serious business is arranged! (BTW: A picture of the cd face can be found here)

Last nights performance

The performance was good. One shy girl said "I think you are my favourite noisemakers." Doing a connected bunch of short performances works well for the audience. What a shame that the recording stopt three times! I will put everything that got recorded online.
Ouverture: I liked it's lightness. It worked nice having to keep the athmosfere. All our sounds connected really well, and all changes in texture came on the right moments. I had nice blends with Juan and my dope synth.
Refractions: Composed thus more serious. Juans electronics were a loving partner for Aslaugs bass sounds.
Toy Control: We had a nice start. Playing our equipment felt like taming a tiger. We managed to grab it!
SPL: scratching the matrix, the delaylines. Nice roomy reverbs! Feels like being cut up by the loan mower yet remaining to be of the opinion it's a nice day.
[break]
Fake Jazz in the bar: We didn't succeed faking music. It was a good session. I expected Ernst and Thijs to rudely interupt us, and getting the audience to the 'hall' again. Miking was a good connection though.
Ernst, Leon, Thijs: Funny view, with Thijs standing in the back. It was good to hear the bass, guitar and bass sounds from the bar again. I was inspired.
Finale:Glad I could join in. Funny how the sound died once. With all six of us playing at the same time, we again managed to blend well. Also, the acoustic instrument did fit in our electronic environment. Nice fat ending movement! What a shame that the recording got cut off again, there.

* Toy Control (Thijs Scheele & Dave Krooshof)
* SPL (Spek, Van Der Loo & Parra)
* Juan Parra & Aslaug Holgersen presenting "Refractions V"
Dendriets radicale benaderingswijze van hun muziek en instrumentarium gecombineerd met rokende soldeerbouten zal wederom een gedenkwaardige avond opleveren.

On Saturday the 8th of January '05, "de Garage" will offer it's stage to "Dendriet" in a new edition of the series "Den Haag Ruist".
Dendriet is an international collective of sound artists, improvisors, sonologists and composers, that was founded in 2003 and has its homebase in The Hague. Utilizing their shared interest in the boundries of new music, the group initiated various collaborations. For their projects the members use a broad spectrum of sound sources: from guitars and double-bass to selfbuild and modified equipment and instruments such as the infamous electric-tuba, the dope-synth and crackle-boxes in
all sizes.
In their own perception they are all together interfaced in their own way to one big synthesizer network. This aspect is reflected in the name Dendriet, which refers to a fractal-shaped oxide but is aswell the name of the branches of a nerve cell that connect to other nerve cells. This particular night will present, along with the full group blast, sets of the following sub groups:
* Toy Control (Thijs Scheele & Dave Krooshof)
* SPL (Spek, Van Der Loo & Parra)
* Juan Parra & Aslaug Holgersen presenting "Refractions V"
Dendriets radical approach of their music and instruments combined with smoking soldering-irons will assure the visitor of another memorable evening.
